Microsoft Action Pack

How would you like $30,000 of Microsoft software for $299?  Legally?  Ha, yes, legally. Ok, well, the actual worth could be less, could be more.  Basically, you sign up your company as a Registered Member of the Microsoft Partner Program (free to register) and pay a $299 yearly subscription fee for the Action Pack.  Microsoft will send you a welcome kit with a ton of software (contents listed here), including 10 licenses for Vista Business & Office Enterprise 2007.  After the welcome kit, you'll receive 3 quarterly updates for whatever new releases have come out since the last shipment.

Update: Action Pack software has switched to ISO downloads online rather than sending a binder of CDs/DVDs.

This brings us to the inevitable question: What's the catch? "The Microsoft Action Pack Subscription License Agreement allows the use of Action Pack software only for internal business needs, as well as for evaluation, demonstration, testing, training, and educational purposes." The Frequently Asked Questions page for the Action Pack is here . The links to the Action Pack section of Microsoft's site are secured, just in case you're wondering why you might be prompted to allow a certificate.  From what I've read online and heard from MS event seminars, you can use this software in your business, but aren't supposed to use it "in production."  I'm sure there's some gray areas as to what that means and I'm not even sure myself where the lines are drawn.  Either way, I'm sure it's much more favorable in the judge's eyes versus picking up some pirated copy off the Internet.  ;)

If  the software is only to be used by one person, and the sole purpose being for testing/evaluating (not used in business), you may want to check out the TechNet Plus Subscription .
